Frequently Asked Questions

Have a Question? You're Probably Not the First.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Visit to SOZO in Torrance, CA

We’ve gathered answers to the questions we hear most often to help you feel informed, comfortable, and completely confident before walking through our doors. Whether you are brand new to East Asian medicine or returning for continued care, our team is dedicated to providing transparent, thoughtful guidance every step of the way.

Getting Started

1 / What can I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment is an in-depth, 75-to-80-minute clinical session. It includes a comprehensive consultation, a thorough review of your medical history, structural or tongue/pulse assessment, and your first full acupuncture treatment tailored to your specific health goals.

2 / What should I wear?

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that can easily be rolled up above the elbows and knees. If your treatment area requires direct access (such as for back pain or hip care), professional medical draping and gowns are provided to ensure your complete privacy and comfort.

3/ Should I eat before acupuncture?

Yes. We strongly advise having a light meal or snack 1 to 2 hours prior to your visit. Receiving acupuncture on a completely empty stomach may occasionally cause mild lightheadedness or fatigue.

4/ What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring a valid government-issued Photo ID, your health insurance card (if you plan to utilize out-of-network or select in-network acupuncture benefits), any recent imaging/lab records relevant to your visit, and a complete list of your current medications or botanical supplements.

5 / How long is an appointment?

Initial visits range between 75 to 80 minutes to allow ample time for diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning. Follow-up sessions typically range from 50 to 60 minutes depending on whether you are receiving general acupuncture or specialized care.

Acupuncture & Clinical Care

1 / Does Acupuncture hurt?

Most patients feel minimal to no discomfort at all. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, solid, and completely flexible—nothing like hollow hypodermic needles used for vaccinations. You may feel a subtle, dull ache, warmth, or a relaxing sensation called De Qi, which indicates your body's nervous system is responding.

2 / Is Acupuncture safe?

Absolutely. When administered by a State-Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.), acupuncture is exceptionally safe. At SOZO, we adhere strictly to Clean Needle Technique (CNT) using single-use, sterile, disposable surgical-grade needles.

3 / How does acupuncture work from an integrative medical perspective?

Acupuncture stimulates specific neuromuscular points to encourage microcirculation, modulate central nervous system activity, release natural endorphins, and suppress systemic inflammation. It supports your body’s innate ability to self-regulate, balance hormones, and recover from physical or metabolic strain.

4 / How many treatments will I need to see results?

Treatment frequency depends on whether your condition is acute or chronic. While many patients notice relief within 1 to 3 visits, chronic conditions or specialized care (such as fertility optimization) typically benefit from a structured multi-visit care plan. Your practitioner will present a customized recommendation during your first visit.

5 / Can I receive acupuncture alongside my conventional medical treatments?

Yes, absolutely. Integrative medicine works best when collaborative. Acupuncture safely complements medical treatments, physical therapy, and specialty care. We frequently co-manage patients alongside primary care physicians, OB-GYNs, and reproductive endocrinologists.

Insurance, HSA/FSA & Billing

1 / Do you accept insurance at SOZO Integrative Wellness?

Yes. We process eligible out-of-network PPO benefits (including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of CA, Cigna, UHC, UMR, ILWU, and LAFD plans). Additionally, select providers participate with contracted in-network panels such as American Specialty Health (ASH) and most major insurance companies.

2 / How do I verify my acupuncture insurance benefits?

Simply submit your insurance information through our online [ Verify My Insurance ] page. Our dedicated billing staff will verify your policy riders, deductibles, and copays prior to your visit.

3 / Do I need a doctor's referral before booking?

Most PPO plans do not require a referral for acupuncture. However, specific HMO or specialty network plans may require prior authorization. Our team will inform you of any restrictions during your benefit verification.

4 / Is benefit verification a guarantee of payment?

No. Benefit verification is provided as a courtesy based on real-time data from your carrier. Final coverage and reimbursement rates are strictly determined by your insurance company upon claim processing.

5 / Do you accept HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards?

Yes! Acupuncture, therapeutic bodywork, and clinical consultations are eligible medical expenses under most HSA and FSA plans. You may use your HSA/FSA debit card directly at checkout.

Appointments, Cancellation & Clinic Policies

1 / What is your appointment cancellation policy?

To honor the time of our clinicians and other patients awaiting care, we respectfully require at least 24 hours’ advance notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a standard fee.

2 / What happens if I am running late for my visit?

We do our best to accommodate unexpected delays. However, to stay on schedule for following patients, your session time may be shortened while the standard visit fee still applies.

3 / Can I bring a companion or family member with me?

You are welcome to bring a support person to your initial consultation. To maintain a serene, relaxing healing environment for all patients, we request that companions remain in our reception area during the actual treatment portion unless physical assistance is clinically required.

4 / Can I request a specific practitioner?

Yes. When scheduling your visit, you may select your preferred clinician based on their specialty and schedule availability.

Botanical Medicine & Natural Remedies

1 / Am I required to take herbal medicine during my treatment?

No. Botanical formulas are completely optional. They are only suggested when your practitioner determines that internal herbal therapy will significantly accelerate your healing process.

2 / Are your herbal formulas customized?

Yes. We utilize high-quality, laboratory-tested East Asian botanical formulations that are tailored specifically to your pulse, constitution, phase of life, and current symptoms.

3 / Can herbal formulas be taken safely with prescription medications?

Many herbal medicine protocols can be safely integrated alongside pharmaceuticals. Your clinician will thoroughly review all current prescriptions and supplements to screen for potential interactions before recommending any formula.

Fertility, Pregnancy & Postpartum Care

1 / Do you offer specialized fertility acupuncture in Torrance?

Yes. We offer comprehensive, phase-targeted fertility protocols designed to support natural conception, cycle regulation, IUI prep, IVF cycle optimization, and pre/post-embryo transfer support.

2 / Is fertility care covered by health insurance?

Specialized fertility optimization programs, cycle-based herbal care, and transfer protocols are typically non-covered elective services offered on a self-pay basis.

3 / Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes. When performed by a licensed clinician trained in prenatal care, pregnancy acupuncture is safe and gentle. It is frequently utilized to alleviate morning sickness, fatigue, sciatica, pelvic pressure, and prepare the body for labor.

4 / Do you provide postpartum recovery care?

Yes. Our postpartum recovery protocols focus on replenishing blood and metabolic vitality, balancing postpartum hormones, improving lactation, easing pelvic discomfort, and promoting mental-emotional wellness.

Aesthetic & Rejuvenation Services

1 / What is Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture?

It is a natural, non-surgical facial treatment that utilizes micro-needles to stimulate collagen and elastin production, increase facial circulation, reduce fine lines, and tone facial musculature for a healthy, youthful radiance.

2 / What is Advanced Microneedling Therapy?

Microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy) uses automated micro-channels to trigger cellular skin repair, smooth skin texture, fade hyperpigmentation, and diminish acne scarring using targeted regenerative serums.

3 / Are cosmetic acupuncture and microneedling covered by insurance?

No. Aesthetic, skin, and scalp rejuvenation therapies are elective cosmetic treatments offered strictly on a self-pay basis.

General Wellness & Clinic Distinction

1 / Is acupuncture only used for pain management?

Not at all. While acupuncture is world-renowned for pain relief, it is equally effective for digestive disorders, insomnia, anxiety, systemic inflammation, autoimmune support, women's health, and preventive wellness.

2 / What makes SOZO Integrative Wellness different from other clinics?

At SOZO, we refuse to practice "one-size-fits-all" healthcare. We combine the time-tested wisdom of East Asian medicine with modern evidence-based clinical standards, providing generous one-on-one time, elegant clinic space, and personalized care plans tailored to your specific biology.

3 / Do I need to purchase a care package to receive treatment?

No. While multi-visit Care Plans offer optimal continuity and value for long-term health goals, single pay-as-you-go sessions are always available. You are never forced into a package.
